Day 54 – Out of the Doldrums

I don’t really remember when I first heard of the term “Doldrums”…it might have been back in high school when we read Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner:

Down dropt the breeze, the sails dropt down,
‘Twas sad as sad could be ;
And we did speak only to break
The silence of the sea !

All in a hot and copper sky,
The bloody Sun, at noon,
Right up above the mast did stand,
No bigger than the Moon.

Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion ;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.

But I think I’ve just gotten over a rather large case of them.  It’s funny to think that it took so much focus to get myself here…but that it only took two months to make me step back and reevaluate my limitations and goals.

Well, and I know I’m only human.

Anyhow, I think I’m back on track again.  Learning is tough, but if it weren’t tough, we wouldn’t be learning. Or something like that. I’ve had a few sobering moments in the last couple of weeks but I think I’ve got it mostly sorted out now. I have a pretty solid idea of what direction I want to take my thesis in and a couple of good ideas for the summer. And while I’m still struggling with the language, there has been progress and there should be more progress in the near future.

Goodness, what a lot to do!

Lots to do...but plenty of tea and friends on standby!

Ah! That nice glass teapot? 110 RMB down from 150RMB and also includes a glass tea-candle warmer that is not shown. Damaicha inside was 12RMB for 500 grams, I think.

Day 8 – Pre-class jitters

Pre-class jitters are assuaged by purchasing snack food. Today’s selection is Lay’s Finger Licking Braised Pork flavored stackable chips and a random Wang Wang rice snack. 8.5 RMB and 2.3 RMB respectively.

"Bajie! Are you eating again??"

"Bajie! Are you eating again??"

I will remind you now, that it is most definitely not the time to remind me how much saturated fat and cholesterol either of these items contain. Perhaps after I return to the U.S. 5 kilos heavier…

Day 1

I am in Nanjing!

It’s been about 24 hours since I flew in to Nanjing Lukou International Airport yesterday afternoon.  I’m tempted to say that the flight wasn’t really that grueling, but since this afternoon’s outing, I feel completely wiped out. The weather is pretty hot and humid, and the Chinese characters everywhere are making my head spin. (I’ve totally got to cram this week before class starts!)

That said, the city is rather pretty (the traffic is terrifying!) and the Hopkins-Nanjing Center and Nanjing University campuses are gorgeous! The school arranged a tour of both for us today and we got to see most of the important school features in a whirlwind. The old architecture on the Nanda campus was definitely a treat to see.  I’ll most definitely go back to have a closer look at it all.

Look at the Koi Pond!My room overlooks the courtyard of the HNC campus, so I get to wake up every morning to see the koi fish swim circles around the fish pond.

There’s still a lot to see…but it’ll have to wait until later this week. I think it’s time for a nap! (And say hi to Wukong and Bajie ^^)

Wukong and Bajie in Nanjing!
